POSITION SUMMARY:
As an integral member of the council’s executive team, the Executive Vice President of Marketing & Communications is responsible for developing, enhancing, and maintaining the council’s brand and image. The EVP takes a leadership role in creating, implementing and managing strategies for marketing campaigns, public relations, communications, and media to promote Girl Scouting to internal and external constituents.
A key aspect of this position is building and maintaining strong, collaborative partnerships with internal teams and external vendors and audiences with the ultimate goal of increasing girl and adult membership and gaining financial and community support. The position serves on the Executive Leadership Team as head of the Marketing & Communications department, the lead functional subject matter expert, and supervises marketing and communications staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Develops and executes council-wide strategic marketing, communications, and public relations plans with goals, policies, and procedures.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of a variety of marketing initiatives (avenues include paid and in-kind television, radio, and print advertising; social media; Web; digital; and direct mail) to generate leads for girl members and adult volunteers throughout the council jurisdiction. Responsible for budget creation and monitoring related to campaigns and overall department.
  • Supervises the design, branding, and production of all communications and marketing materials, including but not limited to council newsletters, publications and print materials.
  • Actively cultivates and maintains favorable relationships with local and mainstream media across council jurisdiction.
  • Serves as public relations lead, fielding inquiries from news media, providing guidance to respond to requests for information about the council, and serves as the council’s designated spokesperson as necessary and appropriate with the ability to identify internal subject matter experts (staff and members) for public speaking opportunities.
  • Aggressively seeks media opportunities to support the recruitment of girls and adults, promote Girl Scout programs, and attract new funding sources.
  • Serves as head writer with particular focus on press releases, speeches, articles/content; serves as final proofreader on external communications.
  • Proactively researches stories, collects testimonials, writes press releases and pitches feature articles that enhance the Girl Scout image and brand and provide increased visibility to the council.
  • Prepares speeches and design presentations for senior leadership and/or council initiatives with a key focus on communications for the CEO (speeches, scripts, etc.).
  • Analyzes market trends, gathers customer insights and recommends changes to communications and marketing strategies and plans based on analysis and feedback.
  • Develops and maintains a working partnership with volunteers that encourages the exchange of public relations and marketing opportunities, capitalizes on local knowledge and positively promotes Girl Scouts. Provides support and resources that are readily available to assist their efforts.
  • Works collaboratively with all functional areas of the council to develop media campaigns, communications pieces and messages that support and achieve the council’s Membership, Product Program, Camp/Outdoors, Fund Development, HR, Property, and Special Events goals.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, coaching/supervision, and evaluation of operational staff in Marketing & Communications department; organizes and directs work toward the achievement of council objectives.
  • Actively participates in the development of environments that foster diversity, equity, inclusion, and access through words, actions, and attitude.
  • Serves as Lead of Crisis Communications Team and active member of Executive Leadership Team.
  • Supports the Council’s strategic goals and mission as an active and engaged member of the GSWNY team.

Experience and Skills:

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Girl Scouts is proud to serve a diverse community of girls and volunteers. Bilingual language skills or proficiency in one or more non-English language is always appreciated, though not required.
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree plus five years of marketing, communication, public relations, graphic design or related experience. Managerial experience developing and administering a marketing program required.
  • Demonstrated progressive responsibility and related experience with graphic arts, marketing, website architecture, and electronic communications (i.e. e-newsletters and other e-correspondence).
  • An inclusive leadership style and outstanding management skills, experience building and supporting high-functioning teams is essential.
  • Strong communication, organizational and time management skills focused on planning, implementation and collaboration. Must be able to communicate clearly and accurately in written and oral communications. Excellent writing skills are essential.
  • Task-oriented, must be able to quickly shift from project to project at a moment’s notice and still complete the work. Necessary project management skills include formulating short- and long-term project goals, objectives, schedules, and priorities in line with council and department goals, anticipate issues, obstacles, or opportunities that may impact plans or actions, establish courses of action for accomplishing goals while attending to and incorporating information obtained during day-to-day administrative tasks.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor required. Must be a self-starter and must be able to take initiative to be successful in this position. Must possess strong interpersonal skills and have the ability to work well with diverse constituencies.
  • Excellent computer skills including experience working with HTML/CSS, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro DC), Adobe AEM, Adobe Business Catalyst or similar content management system (SharePoint, WordPress), and Salesforce Customer Management System and Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Constant Contact or similar platforms.
  • Experience with basic budget and contract administration.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed.

  • Ability to effectively manage and foster relationships with council staff, volunteers and within community.
  • Subscribe to the principles of the Girl Scout Movement and become a registered member of GSUSA.
  • Successfully pass the required background checks at hire and thereafter.
  • Maintain reliable transportation to and from home and work.
  • Ability to meet the travel requirements of the position to conduct Council business.
  • If travel is required, must possess a valid driver’s license, meet minimum state auto insurance requirements, and meet the insurance carrier’s requirements for coverage.

HOURS & TRAVEL

  • Hours of council operations. Includes some evenings and weekends for council programs and events. Travel throughout council jurisdiction.

GIRL SCOUT MEMBERSHIP:

All Employees of Girl Scouts must maintain an active, annual membership in Girl Scouts of Western New York. This membership must be renewed annually, and all newly hired employees are expected to enroll with GSWNY within the first 30 days of their employment.
